Armed Robbers Break Into 73-Year-Old Woman’s Home And Shoot Her, Ends With One Suspect Dead
Note: We are reissuing this story that first made headlines in 2021.
Goldsboro police have initiated an investigation into a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a home intruder and left a 73-year-old grandmother injured with a gunshot wound to her leg.
Officers arrived at the scene after receiving reports of a shooting near 402 S. William Street. Upon arrival, they discovered the woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Shortly after their 1 a.m. response, a man was located at the intersection of William Street and Elm Street, also with an apparent gunshot wound.
Both individuals were taken to Wayne UNC Health Care, where the 19-year-old man, Khalil Herring, succumbed to his injuries.

Reports indicate that two masked intruders forced their way into the home, demanding money. During the incident, they shot the grandmother in the leg, which prompted her 12-year-old grandson to defend himself and shoot at the intruders.
Evidence has identified Herring as one of the masked intruders who was shot during the attempted burglary.

Randolph Bunn, the woman’s son and the boy’s great-uncle, recounted, “They came into the house, I opened the door, and they rushed in… One of them had a gun. They pushed me down to the ground… The [73-year-old woman] was in the kitchen, and I don’t understand why they shot her.”
Goldsboro police have indicated that they do not anticipate any charges against the 12-year-old, although the investigation remains active.

“[The intruder] just shot his grandma… He would have shot him too, he would’ve shot me too, he would’ve killed us all,” Bunn further expressed.
