Ex-youth pastor’s chilling suicide note revealed after he died in his cell awaiting trial for his wife’s cliff death

The suicide note of a former youth pastor has been disclosed following his death in his cell, where he was awaiting trial for allegedly pushing his wife off a cliff two decades ago.

The suicide note of a former youth pastor from Las Vegas, who tragically died in his jail cell while awaiting trial for the death of his wife, has come to light. This letter provides a haunting glimpse into the thoughts of a man who maintained his innocence, yet recognized the likelihood of a conviction.

David Vander Meer, 47, was taken into custody in June 2026 and placed in the Clark County Detention Center, where he awaited extradition to Utah to face murder charges related to the 2006 death of his wife, Bernadette.

Just two days post-arrest, he was discovered unresponsive in his cell. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he passed away the next day. Sheriff Kevin McMahill reported that he had strangled himself in an unusual manner.

A letter and a will were located near his remains.

Vander Meer never anticipated that legal proceedings would lead to his arrest. In his note, he asserted his innocence while clearly explaining why he chose not to contest the charges.

“I didn’t kill her,” he stated. “I was never afraid of legal action because I didn’t kill her, and I never thought it would lead to an arrest.”

However, he acknowledged that the evidence against him painted a different picture.

“The additional allegations I have heard about are largely false, but not entirely. They create a narrative that cannot be ignored. They indicate conviction.”

He went on to express, “I was naive to believe that just because I didn’t kill Bernadette, there would be no issues with the charges. The reports in the affidavit contain some truth, but they depict a scenario I will likely not be able to overcome.”

He concluded the note simply with: “David.”

Bernadette Vander Meer tragically fell over 1,000 feet from the Angels Landing trail in Utah’s Zion National Park on August 22, 2006, just a day after she and her husband celebrated their wedding anniversary.

At the age of 29, her death was initially deemed accidental due to a lack of evidence, although investigators found the situation to be suspicious.

For over 15 years, the case remained inactive until 2022, when police received a tip from a member of a youth group alleging that Vander Meer had been grooming minors. The subsequent investigation revealed a much darker narrative.

Court documents indicated that in the months leading up to Bernadette’s death, Vander Meer had taken out life insurance policies on her totaling $550,000 each. After her passing, he collected $567,439 and used the money to indulge in a lavish lifestyle.

Additionally, he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl, reportedly stating that they could only be together if his wife was “not alive.” In the year prior to her death, Bernadette had become suspicious of his unfaithfulness.

Vander Meer eventually married the girl he had the affair with, but they divorced in 2014. In 2026, charges were finally brought against him after his former boss informed the police that he suspected Vander Meer had pushed his wife off the cliff.

He also faced charges of insurance fraud, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death in custody is currently ongoing.
