A recently released bodycam video from the University of Central Florida has ignited a passionate online discussion after documenting a tense encounter between campus police and transgender student Jarrett Preston Vick.

The incident reportedly started in 2025 when UCF police responded to a call about a potential vehicle theft. Jarrett Preston Vick was not accused of stealing the vehicle but became involved in the situation. Tensions rose when officers referred to Vick using male pronouns, which led to repeated objections from Vick.
In the video, Vick can be heard requesting officers to use she/her pronouns and expressing distress over being misgendered. A university staff member named Josh also attempts to de-escalate the situation as the exchange grows more intense. At one point, an officer cautioned Vick that she could be handcuffed and taken for evaluation under Florida’s Baker Act if she did not lower her voice.
The confrontation ultimately escalated further, resulting in officers detaining and handcuffing Vick. According to court documents, she was later charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer without violence, and disorderly conduct. Vick has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the case is still ongoing.

The bodycam footage quickly sparked a divide among viewers. Some criticized the officers for consistently using male pronouns despite Vick’s objections, claiming that this contributed to the escalation of the situation.
Many felt that the entire incident was blown out of proportion. One individual commented, “How can people sit behind their screens calling an innocent person disgusting names when she was falsely arrested, misgendered by cops, pepper sprayed, tased,” while another remarked, “That is absolute insanity.”
Others pointed out that, regardless of the pronoun issue, Vick’s conduct towards the police was inappropriate, highlighting the need to stay calm during interactions with law enforcement.
This controversy has reignited discussions about the psychological effects of misgendering.
