John Goodman, 74, appears unrecognizable after shedding nearly 200 pounds and has successfully maintained his weight loss for several years.

The cherished Hollywood star John Goodman, renowned for his roles in The Big Lebowski, Roseanne, and Monsters Inc, has lost approximately 200 pounds and, at 74, looks significantly different from the man audiences have admired for decades.

At his peak weight, Goodman was estimated to be around 392 pounds. He has now managed to lose nearly half of his body weight, not through a fad diet or a quick solution, but by making a slow and intentional transformation to his lifestyle that he has consistently upheld over the years.

What changed after years of yo-yo dieting

Goodman has candidly shared what inspired him to make this change and what ultimately helped him maintain it after years of yo-yo dieting.

“I’d have a handful of food and it’d go to my mouth,” he revealed to People. “In the past, I would take three months off, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud and revert to my old ways.”

The pivotal moment came when he chose to approach things differently. He eliminated alcohol and sugar from his diet, started exercising regularly, and simply stopped eating all the time. Instead of seeking dramatic short-term results, he concentrated on gradual, sustainable changes.

“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself,” he shared with ABC in 2016. “You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”

He also mentioned that energy and work served as additional motivating factors.

“I’ve reached a point in my life where I can no longer afford to be inactive. It actually fuels my energy to work, as work can be quite exhausting,” he shared.

His weight had always been a notable aspect of his performances — from the formidable Walter in The Big Lebowski to lending his voice to the massive Sulley in Monsters Inc. However, Goodman emphasized that this transformation was never about his profession. It was about enhancing his life.

“I aimed to improve my quality of life,” he stated plainly.
