Kagin’s Inc., a well-known numismatics company, made news by officially verifying the photo earlier this month. The 4-inch-by-5-inch tintype shows Billy the Kid during the summer of 1878, possibly at a wedding, along with members of his infamous gang, The Regulators.
David McCarthy, Kagin’s senior numismatist, explained the extensive examination that took over a year before the firm validated the photo’s authenticity. McCarthy highlighted the importance of thorough verification, noting that just a simple resemblance wouldn’t suffice in such a case. A team of specialists had to be gathered to analyze every detail, making sure that nothing was overlooked.

“When we first encountered the photograph, we were naturally doubtful — an original photo of Billy the Kid is the ultimate treasure of Western Americana,” McCarthy shared. “After over a year of thorough examination, including my personal visit to the site, we now have compelling evidence supporting the image’s authenticity.”
This discovery places the newly found image alongside the only other known photograph of Billy the Kid, which was captured in 1880 in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. That 2-inch-by-3-inch tintype sold for an astonishing $2.3 million in 2010, as reported by Kagin’s.

Billy the Kid, whose real names are Henry McCarty or William H. Bonney, has firmly established himself in American folklore as a famous thief and gunfighter. His audacious escape from prison after killing two guards only enhanced his legendary reputation. While folklore claims he was responsible for 21 deaths, one for each year of his life, historical evidence points to a more realistic figure of nine.
As per the New Mexico Tourism Department, Billy the Kid was directly accountable for four deaths, including the two guards, and he played a role in the deaths of five others. His legendary escapades concluded when Sheriff Pat Garrett located him and served justice at Fort Sumner in 1881.
