Diana Armstrong’s 42-foot fingernails have not only broken records but also captured attention for years. However, it’s not merely their astonishing 42-foot length that draws the gaze. Now, the world-record holder is tackling the one question that everyone is curious about – yet few have the courage to voice.
Diana Armstrong, a mother and grandmother hailing from Minnesota, has not trimmed her fingernails since 1997 – and as of today, they measure an incredible 42 feet and 10.4 inches in total length.
Her right thumbnail holds the record for the longest, extending 4 feet, 6.7 inches. Even her shortest nail, located on her left pinky, measures 3 feet, 7 inches. Altogether, they surpass the length of a standard bus.
‘Worst day of my life’
Acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the holder of the longest fingernails ever recorded on a pair of hands (female), Armstrong reveals that her choice to grow them was profoundly personal – stemming from a place of sorrow.
In 1997, Armstrong experienced the tragic loss of her 16-year-old daughter, Latisha, due to a sudden asthma attack.
“That was the worst day of my life,” she recounted to Guinness when she received her record-breaking title.
Tribute to daughter
In the difficult years that ensued, Armstrong – who had always preferred longer nails – found it impossible to cut them again.
“[Latisha] was the only one who did my nails. She polished them and filed them for me,” Armstrong shared, explaining that she had left her hairstyling job years ago to become a stay-at-home mother, dedicating herself to the personal ritual of nurturing her nails.
Following Latisha’s death, Armstrong also revealed that she struggled with depression for nearly a decade, stating that her nails became a means of keeping her daughter close in her heart.
‘Her way of holding on’
Although her other children were initially skeptical about her decision, they eventually grasped the emotional significance it held.
“When she shared the back story with us, it really shifted my perspective on it,” her daughter Rania shared with Guinness. “Because, as much as she longed for my sister, I felt that loss too. So, if that’s her way of keeping her memory alive, I’m all for it.”
Uses 15 to 20 bottles of polish
Caring for her nails now demands considerable time, effort, and a team. Each nail requires four to five hours to paint, and Armstrong mentions that the process involves using between 15 and 20 bottles of nail polish, along with a woodworking tool for filing.
“I haven’t visited a nail salon in about 22 years. When they see me approaching, they probably think, ‘Oh no,’” Armstrong joked.
She elaborated that the process is so time-consuming that she now only has her nails painted once every four to five years, often enlisting her children and grandchildren, who love to come up with vibrant designs.
“It all began with my two nieces, and then when I had my daughter, she reached a certain age and naturally joined in because she adored playing with fingernail polish,” Armstrong shared.
Challenges
However, having the longest nails in the world presents significant challenges. Armstrong has stopped driving, noting that her nails would extend outside the car window due to their length.
She steers clear of clothes with zippers and relies on her feet for simple tasks, such as opening the refrigerator or picking up clothes from the floor.
“If I need to grab money off the floor, I can pick up bills,” she explained. “But if I drop coins, they just stay there.”
Restroom
Lastly, she tackled the question that piques everyone’s curiosity – how she manages to use the restroom with such long nails.
“It’s pretty much the same as anyone else using the bathroom, but I handle my nails differently than they do,” Armstrong said with a laugh. “I just use a lot of toilet paper. I wipe myself with a lot of toilet paper.”
She also mentioned that when she goes out, she always seeks the largest stall in public restrooms.
“When I visit a public restroom, I look for the biggest stall. I can’t fit in the smaller ones because my nails are longer than those stalls.”
After more than twenty years, Armstrong has no intention of cutting her nails. Each inch of growth symbolizes the connection she had with her daughter and serves as a reminder of the love that endures even after loss.
“I believe she [Latisha] would be proud of me because she was the last person to do my nails,” she reflected, adding, “That’s who I think of when I let my nails grow.”
