In the summer of 2014, Susan Hickman was taking a walk when something unusual caught her attention. She noticed a broken eggshell lying on the ground.

At first, she thought about just walking past it, but then she decided to stop and check if there was anything inside.

What she discovered was quite surprising.

When Susan peered inside, she found a tiny chick that had just hatched. It was featherless and its eyes were still shut.

She searched the area for a nest but couldn’t find one anywhere.

Susan thought that if she just left the little chick by itself, it wouldn’t make it, so she made up her mind to help him out.

But looking after a baby bird is really tough. For the first two weeks, Susan had to feed the chick every 20 to 30 minutes from the time the sun came up until it went down.

Though it was an exhaustive process, Susan refused to give up. She felt a strong bond with the chick and used a small medicine dropper to make sure he got the nutrition he needed.

The bird was a real fighter, and managed to survive the first day…

… And the next day, too.

Susan soon named him Klinger.

Klinger opened his eyes.

He got feathers…

… and eventually, Klinger grew into a large, stately bird.

Talk about a transformation!

During his recovery, Klinger became an essential part of Susan’s family.

He got lots of love and care and in return, he brought joy into Susan’s life.

Susan was a true animal lover, so she decided to release Klinger back into the wild when he was big enough.

She understood that Klinger had become used to living at home. This bird didn’t know how to handle life outside and wouldn’t make it by himself.

So Susan decided that Klinger simply had to stay with her.

And Klinger doesn’t appear to mind one bit.
