The case of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance on the night of May 3, 2007, continues to be one of the most extensively covered missing-person cases in recent history. At just four years old, Madeleine vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents were dining out.
Seventeen years since her disappearance, her parents firmly believe that she is still alive.
On her 18th birthday, May 12, 2022, her heartbroken parents shared a touching message: “We love you, we’re waiting for you, and we will never give up.”
In 2020, detectives looking into Madeleine McCann’s case voiced their belief that she had been murdered. German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters reportedly mentioned that he does not believe the suspect, Christian Brueckner, transported Madeleine from Praia da Luz to Germany, as many have speculated. Instead, he thinks she was killed in Portugal, according to the Evening Standard Newspaper. Wolters also expressed his hope, saying, “I am optimistic we will solve this case.”
Christian Brueckner, a 44-year-old German man, is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz back in 2005. He is also facing trial for another case involving the alleged rape of an Irish tour representative in 2004.
The case of Madeleine has gained renewed attention after a 21-year-old Polish woman named Julia Wendell claimed to be Madeleine. However, DNA testing confirmed that she is not the missing girl.
Recently, Kate McCann, Madeleine’s mother, expressed her belief that a note found in the restaurant’s reservation book might have played a role in her daughter’s disappearance, as highlighted in the Netflix documentary series, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Kate also opened up about these suspicions in her book Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her.
The note described the group’s intention to leave their children asleep in their nearby apartments while they enjoyed a meal. Unfortunately, it was reportedly visible to the restaurant staff and possibly other guests at the Ocean Club Resort in Praia da Luz.
Kate has expressed concern that this note may have been seen by someone with harmful intentions, potentially aiding in Madeleine’s abduction. She worries that it revealed important information about the McCanns’ routine, making it easier for a perpetrator to target their apartment.
“To my dismay, I noticed that, likely in good faith and just to clarify why she was bending the rules a bit, the receptionist included the reason for our request: we wanted to dine near our apartments since we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them regularly,” Kate wrote. “We will carry this regret with us for the rest of our lives.”
