The Blonde Bikini Bombshell: Whatever Happened to Bo Derek?

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERT

Bo Derek remains a cherished figure in the hearts of those who grew up in the 1970s. She captivated audiences with her striking beauty, including her iconic blonde hair, piercing blue eyes, and unique braided hairstyles that defied stereotypes. Since her time in the spotlight, many have wondered about her life after fame, her decision to step away from acting, and what she is doing now. It’s time to find out what Bo has been busy with lately.

The Early Years of Bo Derek

Mary Cathleen Collins entered the world in Long Beach, California, on November 20, 1956, long before she adopted the name Bo Derek. Raised in a conventional American family by hardworking parents, her father held a position as a sales executive, while her mother pursued a career as a cosmetics artist. During her teenage years, Mary developed a passion for two main interests. Her love for horses led her to become an enthusiastic horsewoman, participating in various competitions to display her skills. Additionally, she nurtured a fondness for acting and sought to enhance her abilities by enrolling in acting classes.

Bo made her debut in the 1977 film Orca. In this Jaws-like movie, a huge killer whale was depicted biting off her leg. Her breakthrough, however, was largely credited to Blake Edwards’ 1979 film “10.” It was at this point that her iconic blond braided hair began to attract attention. She did not pursue a career in action-packed, daring films after this. Some of her notable films include “Tarzan, The Ape Man” from 1981, “Bolero” from 1984, and “Ghosts Can’t Do It” from 1990.

union with John Derek

At the age of 16, Bo encountered the director John Derek, who later became her spouse. At that time, she was married to Linda Evans. Their romantic relationship only began a couple of years later. However, due to Bo’s status as a minor, they had to journey to Mexico and Europe in order to escape the strict American laws.

John and Bo Derek tied the knot not long after, when he was 48 years old and she was 19. Bo admitted in an Interview Magazine feature that she often felt guilty when Linda was around. She confessed, “I played a role in causing some of the pain she (Linda Evans) went through.” Bo displayed exceptional manners and thoughtfulness. Surprisingly, I bumped into her just yesterday at a charity jewelry trunk show. She still exuded the same charm and grace as always. Whenever I’m in her presence, I can’t help but feel terrible. This feeling has stayed with me throughout the years.

Subsequently, John and Bo Derek commenced collaborating on various projects. John would enlist her to showcase her physique to add some excitement to his low-budget films. This brought attention to his movies, but mainly to Bo, as he was already a well-known figure in Hollywood.

Her Braided Hair Look Was Inspired by John Derek

John Derek, although not the creator or director of her most famous film “10,” was the mastermind behind the braided hairstyle. He suggested that Bo show Blake some of the photos he had taken to gauge his interest. Bo was impressed with the look. In the late 1970s, with the trend of blonde and fluffy styles, Bo expressed her desire for a change. Bo Derek commented, “John is an amazing photographer, and I always believed that look would suit me perfectly.” After trying out the hairstyle, John suggested, “Why not show Blake these pictures and see if he approves? It would be ideal for the character, giving you a distinctive appearance.”

Unfortunately, John Derek succumbed to cardiovascular disease in 1998 at the age of 71. Following his death, Bo expressed that she never anticipated being able to form a connection with anyone again. The loss had a profound impact on her.

Bo Derek, the Humanitarian and Horseman

Bo Derek’s initial focus on horseback riding seemed to overshadow her later years in the spotlight. Despite reaching the peak of her acting career, she made the decision to take a step back. Instead, she dedicated herself to becoming a champion for animal rights. Her dedication to protecting and defending animals was truly commendable.

Bo Derek is committed to more than just animals. She has also been appointed as the National Rehabilitation Special Events chair honorary by the VA. As she stated, “The VA’s National Rehabilitation Special Events are essential in promoting the healing of body and spirit, allowing veterans to experience a higher quality of life and enhance their independence.” “I am deeply honored and moved to once again serve as the honorary chair for such a noble cause in support of America’s veterans.”

Bo is currently married to actor John Corbett from “Sex and the City”. They have been together for more than twenty years. They chose to have a private wedding ceremony, surrounded only by their nearest and dearest, without any public announcements.
