Female biker’s gesture at Rolling Thunder makes people clap
In 2002, Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers stepped into the center of the road and rendered a salute to express his gratitude to the thousands of veterans riding their motorcycles during the Memorial Day Rolling Thunder event.
Since, the man – known as “The Saluting Marine” – became a main attraction at the annual parade held in Washington, DC, holding an excruciating hours-long salute to honor fallen soldiers.
Many individuals, moved by Chambers’ dedication to service, convey their appreciation through tears, embraces, or salutes. In 2012, a female soldier parked her blue Sportster beside The Saluting Marine, and her subsequent actions resonated with millions around the globe.
Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers brought his heels together sharply, positioned his fist along the seam of his trousers, and executed a precise salute with his right hand, ensuring it was perfectly aligned with his forehead.
He stood in his position for up to five hours, saluting thousands of veterans as they rode by on their motorcycles outside of the Pentagon during the Memorial Day Rolling Thunder parade.
Chambers earned the nickname The Saluting Marine in 2002 when he unexpectedly stepped into the roadway to honor veterans during the parade. He recounted, “I simply leaped into the path of the parade and raised a salute. Then I began to wonder, ‘Will I be able to maintain this until the end? If I collapse, will I appear utterly foolish?’” This reflection came from his initial experience of sustaining a challenging salute for several hours at the event.
The veteran, who joined the Marines in 1994, adds, “I just got caught up in the moment.”
Rolling Thunder commenced its activities in 1988 with the aim of increasing awareness regarding prisoners of war (POWs) and individuals classified as missing in action (MIA). This event drew thousands of veteran motorcyclists from all over the United States. Regrettably, it concluded in 2019; however, Chambers made a lasting impression on all who witnessed his dedication and respect for veterans.
And he refused to surrender to the heat or a medical condition in his back, holding his position steady until it was over. One year, he even held his salute with a broken wrist, that he refused to cast until he served his duty.
Clearly in distress, some veterans approached Chambers with Aspirin and water, offering their support.
“I do this for the pain,” he explained. “It’s all about the pain. A lot of these guys still hurt and if I can relieve their pain through mine just for one brief moment, then I’ve done my job.”
Numerous emotional veterans, moved by his dedication and discipline, pause along the parade route. Some kneel, while others extend hugs or salutes, all expressing their heartfelt gratitude.
Each time Chambers responded, “No, it was my pleasure. Thank you.”
One year, a young boy stepped on the median and dropped to his knees in front of Chambers.
Sharing a photo of the moment on Facebook, the saluting soldier writes, “Prayers are private he displayed the courage to walk out in front of millions to practice his own faith I had to reinforce his courage and kneel down with him (sic).”
In 2012, an unidentified female soldier brought her baby blue Harley Davidson Sportster to a stop and stood before the battlefield cross memorial, which was composed of combat boots and a rifle, topped with a helmet.
After saluting Chambers and the fallen soldiers, she then placed a red rose by the memorial, prompting an eruption of cheers from parade goers.
The clip, seen by 6.2 million people since it was first posted on YouTube, captured the hearts of people praising her patriotism.
One online user expresses, “That woman instilled in me a profound sense of pride in being an American, especially since I lost two brothers in the war.” Another user adds, “Her words brought me to tears; I am immensely proud to be an American. May God bless all our fallen warriors and may God bless America.”
A retired infantry sniper expresses, “It was truly heartening to witness that woman dismount her bicycle to return the salute. Even more gratifying was the realization that the civilians observing were filled with admiration,” the statement continues, “Therefore, to all who have served with pride, I extend my salute. And to those who may not have served but hold respect for those of us who have, understand that we stand before you – positioned to best protect what is cherished.”
