Elephant Family Resting After 17 Months Walking

To this day, elephants continue to baffle scientists and researchers

A herd of Chinese elephants, which are in danger of extinction, has brought experts upside down and has gone viral for their behavior, on more than one occasion.

This herd of pachyderms left Yunnan province in March 2020, even on that occasion they ended up with more than 30 liters of corn wine. These animals returned to the public eye after it was announced that they had reached their destination after traveling 500 km to Kunming province.

Local authorities express their concern because it is the first time that a migration of this type has lasted so long. His gait was monitored by drones for several months. The police even made way for several towns.

Elephants typically walk short distances, but this herd has been walking for over a year and no one knows why. They have moved about 500 kilometers from their original habitat.

These elephants came out of the Xishuanbanna nature reserve in southwestern China, near the borders of Myanmar and Laos.

Scientists are puzzled , as it is not common to see these elephants crossing so close to the towns and cities through which they crossed. In their wake they broke down doors, shops, stole food and even took turns taking naps.

“To tell the truth, nobody knows anything . However, one can be pretty sure that this is somehow related to a lack of vital resources: food, water, shelter. In most places where Asian elephants live in the wild, people are increasing, traditional habitats are being broken up and reduced,” Joshua Carpenter of New York University commented.

This trip even brought two new members to the herd, two females giving birth during the trip.

“Elephants are very conservative in their behavior and it is unusual for females to travel to new lands while pregnant. They are usually looking for the safest place to give birth,” Lisa Olivier, from the Zambia-based conservation organization Game Rangers International, told the BBC.

The scientific community agrees that this migration is not common since elephants have a very marked path that they follow during their migrations.

Without a doubt, this topic will continue to be talked about in the future. Don’t leave without sharing this news with your friends and also leave us your comments. What do you think happened for these animals to make such a long journey?
