Jimmy Carter was an extraordinary individual who truly deserved a memorable farewell, and it seems he received just that.

The former U.S. President had been facing health challenges for quite some time before he passed away on December 29, 2024. His battle with cancer began in 2015, and he entered hospice care in early 2023.

Remarkably, he lived nearly two years longer than many had anticipated after being admitted to hospice, passing away just two days shy of the new year, which led to a flood of heartfelt tributes.

Given the significant influence Carter had as a peanut farmer who became a statesman—both during his presidency and in his post-presidential years—it was no surprise that his funeral on Thursday, January 9, was a notable event, attracting a prominent gathering of figures from U.S. politics and beyond.

One of the most memorable moments during the service at the Washington National Cathedral was provided by country music icons Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who were close friends of Carter.

They delivered a moving performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” just over a year after they sang the same song at the funeral of Carter’s beloved wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

The poignant connection between the tributes at both funerals resonated deeply with many online, prompting an outpouring of condolences on social media.

Following the service in Washington, Carter’s body was transported back to Georgia for a private funeral in his hometown of Plains, held at the Maranatha Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school.

He was then taken by motorcade for a private burial next to his wife.

Rest in peace, Jimmy Carter.
