The Metro Nashville Police Department has identified the 16-year-old student who lost her life on January 22, 2025, at Antioch High School.
The victim was shot in the school cafeteria and has been named Josselin Corea Escalante. Alongside her, two other students were also injured, with one suffering a minor graze wound that required immediate care at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Josselin’s father, German Corea, is understandably heartbroken over the loss. He expressed, “Every day I told her how much I loved her.” Josselin was not only a dedicated student but also a passionate soccer player. Her father shared his disbelief that his daughter would never return home from school, saying, “It’s not fair.”
The loss has also left Josselin’s aunt in shock. She reflected on how her niece attended school with hopes for a brighter future, only for her life to be tragically cut short. “Oh God. She was my girl. She was very calm and well-behaved, with good grades. She loved her parents and family dearly,” she shared.
In the wake of this tragedy, the family is urging the school to improve its security measures. They feel that without significant changes, the cycle of school shootings may continue, as many follow a similar pattern. A vigil was held at Antioch High School in memory of Escalante on the night of her passing.
A 17-year-old student from the school was the shooter, identified as Solomon Henderson. Tragically, he took his own life by shooting himself in the head. At the time of the incident, two school resource officers were stationed in another part of Antioch High School. Upon hearing the gunfire, they hurried to the cafeteria but arrived just moments after Henderson had ended his life.
Authorities are currently investigating Henderson’s online presence and social media interactions. They are collaborating with local, federal, and state agencies to uncover the motive behind the shooting. So far, police have not found any links between Henderson and his victims. According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, it is possible that the victims were hit by his indiscriminate gunfire in the cafeteria.
Chief John Drake of the Metro Nashville Police Department expressed his condolences, stating, “On behalf of this entire police department, I extend our deep condolences to Antioch High students, parents, and staff. Our officers and counselors will work to be part of the healing process in the days and weeks ahead.”
Dr. Adrienne Battle, the director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, also shared her sympathies with the Antioch High School community. She announced that the school would remain closed for the remainder of the week to allow students and staff time to mourn.
In her statement, she expressed gratitude to the school staff for their quick and courageous adherence to emergency protocols, which may have prevented further tragedy, as well as to the Metro Nashville Police Department and Nashville Fire Department for their prompt response.
