Sometimes, just being in the right place at the right time isn’t sufficient to make a difference. It often requires the bravery to stand up for those who are vulnerable and in need of help.
What started as an ordinary night out quickly transformed into an unforgettable experience for four young boys. Arnaud Nimenya, Carsyn Wright, James Hielema, and Starlyn Rives-Perez were skateboarding in an underground parking garage when they encountered a troubling scene. A young girl, about 15 years old and clearly intoxicated, was being dragged through the area by a well-dressed older man. The boys sensed that something was seriously wrong. The girl appeared to be in distress; one of the boys recalled, “She was screaming and yelling. She just wanted to be out of there. She was all scuffed up and dirty.”
As the boys moved in closer, eager to assist the girl in dealing with the man, he asserted that he was her father. The girl remained silent on the matter, prompting them to take a step back.
“You really don’t want to assume the worst about someone. It’s easier to dismiss it and wish for a better outcome,” Wright remarked.
Despite this, the boys sensed that he was lying, so they chose to turn back and see how the girl was doing once more.

It became clear that this choice would ultimately save the woman’s life.
When they came back, they were utterly horrified by the horrific scene. The man was attacking the young woman, who was powerless to protect herself.
“You walk in, and you see something like that, and you freeze. You don’t know what to do,” Nimenya, one of the young men, said.
They knew they had to act as quickly as they could so they ran towards the attacker. He started running and attempted to escape the parking lot.
“He was trying to walk out and walk away from us,” said Nimenya. “He pushed me aggressively out of the way, kinda like just gives me the smile, like, ‘I can do this. You can’t do anything about it.’”
These brave young men weren’t about to let the attacker escape, so they set out to catch him. This led to a physical altercation when the man began striking the boys with one of their own skateboards. Fortunately, the police arrived just in time to intervene.
The boys felt a sense of relief knowing the woman was now safe. The police, recognizing their courageous actions, wanted to ensure their heroism was acknowledged. They invited the boys to the Chief’s Awards Gala, where they would receive awards and the public recognition they truly earned.
We are incredibly proud of how these young heroes responded to the situation. They even put their own safety on the line to protect a vulnerable woman. You all are real-life heroes and a genuine source of inspiration.
